Why the Orbital SanderVac™
Standard orbital sanders leave dust everywhere. Dust-port sanders capture some, but not all. The SanderVac™ captures it all.
| Sander Type | Dust Collection | Lead-Safe | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard orbital sander (no dust collection) | None | No. Open dust exposure. | Dust covers everything. Requires full cleanup. Not safe for lead paint. |
| Orbital sander with dust port | Partial — dust bag or shop vac via port | Not certified. Misses fine particles. | Dust escapes around the pad. Bag fills quickly. Port clogs on heavy sanding. |
| Festool or Mirka with extractor | Good — sealed system | HEPA-capable with matched extractor. | $400 to $600+ for the sander alone. Requires brand-specific extractor ($600 to $1,200+). Proprietary dust bags. |
| Orbital SanderVac™ | Full — dust shroud seals to any vacuum | Yes. Connects to any HEPA vacuum for lead-safe work under EPA guidelines. | Works with any wet/dry or HEPA vacuum you already own. No proprietary equipment. $449 to $599. |
What You Need to Know About Sanding
Start with 40 grit after stripping. The 40-grit heavy-duty hook-and-loop discs are designed for sanding immediately after paint removal with the Paintshaver® Pro or Marineshaver™ Pro. They remove any residual paint, smooth tool marks, plus prepare the surface for finishing. Follow with 60 grit for a smooth, paint-ready surface.
Lead paint requires a HEPA vacuum. When sanding surfaces that were stripped of lead paint, pair the SanderVac™ with a HEPA vacuum for contained, lead-safe finishing under EPA guidelines. The dust shroud captures particles at the source before they become airborne. Read our lead-safe paint removal guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Orbital SanderVac™?
The Orbital SanderVac™ is a 5-inch dustless random orbital sander with a built-in polycarbonate dust shroud that connects to any wet/dry or HEPA vacuum. It captures sanding dust at the source for dust-free finishing on wood, fiberglass, plus stripped surfaces. Made in the USA by American International Tool.
Do I need to sand after using the Paintshaver® Pro?
Yes, for a smooth, paint-ready surface. After stripping, the Orbital SanderVac™ removes any residual paint, smooths tool marks, plus prepares the surface for primer plus paint. Start with 40-grit discs, then finish with 60 grit.
Is the Orbital SanderVac™ safe for lead paint sanding?
Yes, when paired with a HEPA vacuum. The dust shroud captures lead-containing particles at the source before they become airborne. This setup meets EPA guidelines for lead-safe work. Always test for lead before sanding any surface painted before 1978.
What grit sanding discs should I use?
Start with 40-grit discs for heavy sanding after paint removal. Follow with 60-grit discs for finishing. Both are available in 50-packs of heavy-duty 5-inch hook-and-loop discs designed for the SanderVac™. These discs last roughly three times longer than standard paper discs.
Does the Orbital SanderVac™ work with my existing vacuum?
Yes. The SanderVac™ connects to any wet/dry or HEPA vacuum via the included 10-foot, 1.25-inch ID vacuum hose. No proprietary extractors or brand-specific equipment required. Use the vacuum you already own.
Which Orbital SanderVac™ model should I choose?
The 6 Amp DIY ($449) handles occasional sanding jobs with a 2-year warranty. The 7.5 Amp Pro ($499) adds more power plus a 5-year warranty for regular use. The 12 Amp Pro ($599) delivers the most power with soft-start, anti-kickback protection, plus a lifetime warranty for professionals.
